Okotoks men facing charges after fatal drunken street race

Two people are facing multiple charges after drunkenly racing on a southern Alberta highway and killing one person in a collision in the spring.

Cpl. Sabrina Clayton said at around 1 a.m. on May 6, a black Mercedes and a red motorcycle were seen racing on Highway 2A, just north of Okotoks.

“Shortly thereafter, there was a resulting collision, which resulted in the death of a 43-year-old man from Okotoks,” Clayton said. “As a result of that collision as well as the racing prior to, Mr. Jody Sebryk, 45 years of age of Okotoks, is facing several charges.”

Daniel Tillapaugh was pronounced dead at the scene.

Charges against Sebryk include impaired driving, dangerous operation of a vehicle, and criminal negligence causing death while street racing.

The motorcyclist, 25-year-old Benjamin Legere of Okotoks, is also facing multiple charges including dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing death.

Both are scheduled to appear in Okotoks court on September 29.
