Former employee charged in Bowden prison escape

RCMP have charged a former guard at Bowden Institution with aiding in the escape of one of its inmates.

Sylvain Martin escaped back in April 2015 from the minimum security annex and was arrested in the fall on a Canada wide warrant in Quebec.

Mounties allege the accused had an inappropriate financial relationship with Martin while he was in custody.

Peter Edgar, 61, of Red Deer County has been charged with two counts of permitting or assisting escape.

Innisfail RCMP Staff Sergeant Chris Matechuk says it was a lengthy 19-month investigation into how Martin was able to escape.

“He was arrested in Quebec, so geography played a part too,” said Martin. “So, the extent of the investigation had to involve certain people in Quebec City as well.”

Edgar is no longer employed with Corrections Canada, and he’s scheduled to appear in court on October 25.
