City responds to Flames’ numbers on new arena

The City of Calgary says the Calgary Flames numbers for a new arena, don’t add up.

They released a lengthy question and answer statement after the team released their offer to build a new arena early Thursday morning.

The city says that the Flames Community Revitalization Levy number of $225 million wouldn’t work because the area where the CRL is, the East Village and Victoria Park, has only ten years left on the CRL.

Even so, the money from the levy, about $150 million, is already earmarked for other Victoria Park projects.

They also say the team is only putting in $100 million, not $275 million because $150 million of that would be a ticket tax paid for by fans with the money financed by the city.

Mayor Naheed Nenshi plans to speak about the latest developments on the arena Friday during an event with the Mayor of Saint John, New Brunswick.
