Climber critically injured after falling in Columbia Ice Fields

A 30-year-old man has been flown to hospital here in Calgary after falling while climbing in the Columbia Ice Fields.

STARS Air Ambulance flew the man in critical, life-threatening condition after he fell around 4:30 p.m. Monday.

STARS spokesperson Fatima Khawajah said there were a number of groups involved in the rescue.

“This is one of those missions in which we have all of our emergency partners involved working that chain of survival, getting the patient to tertiary care, so certainly there were a number of hands involved in this mission,” she said.

A rescue helicopter, park wardens, RCMP and EMS all worked to transport the patient to Saskatchewan River Crossing where he was picked up by STARS.
