Wildfire threatening Waterton Lakes National Park moves from B.C. toward Alberta

WATERTON LAKES NATIONAL PARK, Alta. – Parks Canada says there is a high probability that a wildfire will spread into the southwestern corner of Alberta’s Waterton Lakes National Park on Monday.

The fire has moved 11.5 kilometres down British Columbia’s Akamina Valley over the past three days and is now 1.5 kilometres from the Akamina Pass on the park’s boundary.

Officials say the Kenow fire covers about 114 square kilometres and intense fire behaviour is forecast for the next two or three days.

Containment options could include strategic burnouts and sprinkler lines to slow or stop the fire if it enters the park.

A mandatory evacuation order was issued on Friday when a forecast shift in winds heightened the danger to the park’s townsite.

A reception centre was set up in the nearby town of Pincher Creek, where 96 evacuees registered but none needed to stay overnight.
