Treatment for excessive sweating condition could help kids heading back to school

Heading back to school can be tough and if your child has a health condition it can make them an easy target for bullies.

However, there’s one condition that you and your child might not realize there is treatment for.

Hyperhidrosis is a serious medical condition that causes excessive sweating, though it does not always have to be visible to be a problem.

“You know, hand holding in line can be very stressful. The games kids tend to play in in gym class,” says Angela Ballard, a registered nurse and spokesperson with the International Hyperhidrosis Society.

She says because of the social stigma, kids who suffer from the problem are often bullied and are very self-conscious.

But there is help.

“There’s prescription antiperspirant available, stronger, over-the-counter antiperspirant, Botox is a viable option, there is a permanent solution and sometimes lasers are even used.”

Ballard says you don’t have to be dripping with perspiration to have the condition but if it’s excessive in any way and it’s affecting your life, you may want to see your doctor.

You can find out more on the IHHS website, along with other suggestions on how to deal with it.

It’s estimated nearly five per cent of the world’s population suffers from hyperhidrosis.
