Omni launches national multilingual newscasts

Four new tv newscasts will hit the air across Canada on Omni Television on Friday, September 1st.

The network is now producing national news in four languages: Mandarin, Cantonese, Punjabi and Italian.

The newscasts will be delivered seven days a week.

Omni Director Manuel Fonseca says they’ll deliver national and international stories to people in a language that is comfortable for them to understand.

“The goal there is to help them understand the issues and events that are happening in their new communities and that includes everything from politics on a national level to politics on a provincial and local level, to human interest stories as well,” says Fonseca. “Our mandate is to make sure that Canadians and new Canadians are as informed on issues and events in the communities that they have chosen to move into so that they are more engaged in the events that are happening around them.”

The newscasts, which will be offered on all digital basic TV packages, will also be available online shortly after broadcast at omninews.ca

Rounding out the news and information programming, OMNI Regional will also broadcast 30-minute current affairs talk shows in Cantonese,Mandarin and Punjabi.   Editions will be produced in Calgary, Edmonton, Toronto and Vancouver.

Omni is owned by Rogers Communications, the parent company of 660 NEWS.
