Town of Hanna begins planning mine closure

How will the town of Hanna diversify its economy after shutting down coal? A new project is trying to answer that question and put it into action.

The town has announced it will set up 10 community action teams for the ‘Community Action to Create Diversification’ project, with a $450,000 grant from the provincial government.

The teams will be made up of residents, local business leaders and economic development experts to create new jobs and attract investment.

Hanna’s main employer, the coal mine, is expected to be shut down by 2030 and there’s been major concern over job losses, along with the likely closure of a generating plant.

The town expects to begin hosting community meetings to establish teams in the coming weeks.
