Teen drowns in southern Alberta lake

RCMP east of Calgary say a teenager has died at a popular provincial park.

Around 3:45 Tuesday afternoon, police, fire, and EMS from Brooks were all called out to Lake Newell in Kinbrook Island Provincial Park for a possible drowning.

Investigators say a 16-year-old boy had been floating on the lake when he jumped off his flotation device.

RCMP Corporal Marcia McDermott tells 660 NEWS the teen was clearly having trouble.

“He appeared to be in distress and called out for help before going under the water,” said McDermott. “He wasn’t seen again for quite some time and the boy’s body was recovered after a search of the water.”

The Medicine Hat Aquatic Rescue Team, Alberta Parks and a host of other responders searched the lake for about three hours before finding his body.

Lake Newell is a busy spot for southern Albertans and is located about 10 kilometres south of Brooks.
