Call for donors to book blood donation appointments

With another long weekend almost here, Canadian Blood Services is making an appeal to have people book donor appointments.

There are 25,000 unfilled spots across the country.

The Canadian Blood Services Prairies Associate Director Judy Jones said there are still more than 1,000 spots open in Calgary alone.

“We have our blood donor clinic at Eau Claire Market on the second floor that we just opened up in July where people can donate and we also have mobile blood donor clinics in communities that are near their homes,” she said.

Jones said this tends to happen the last long weekend of summer before school starts when everyone is more focused on getting outside.

“All blood types are needed but especially right now our O-negative inventory is at a level that we would like to increase especially before the long weekend,” she explained. “We usually try to have five to eight days supply on hand and we’re currently sitting at only three days supply of O-negative.”

O-negative can help any patient, even if doctors don’t know their blood type.
