Calgary police cruiser rammed with stolen truck

Calling it reckless and dangerous behaviour, Calgary police are on the hunt for a suspect after a stolen truck crashed into a CPS cruiser Monday night and they have a good idea of who is responsible.

“Because one of the officers involved in the situation had arrested that individual the day before in that proximity,” Acting Insp. Darren Cave said Tuesday.

Ironically, the suspect was arrested after being found passed out in a different stolen vehicle and was later released.

The collision happened while police were patrolling the North Haven area at about 11:30 p.m. Monday, when they noticed a black 2005 Dodge Ram on 64 Avenue near an ongoing problem house.

Officers followed the vehicle to the nearby community of Huntington Hills when the truck stopped unexpectedly.

Investigators say the officers didn’t try stopping the truck, but the driver put it in reverse and hit the gas as police steered their cruiser to avoid a direct hit from the front.

The officers weren’t hurt, but the police car wasn’t drivable.

“This is reckless behaviour that these people are displaying, lack of regard for human life, it could’ve been anybody that was hit, it could’ve been any of our loved ones,” Cave said.

The suspicious vehicle fled the scene and was later found abandoned on 5 Street N.W.

“This could’ve been a lot worse,” Cave said.

He said the home the stolen vehicle was spotted by is known for drug and other suspicious activity.
