School board trustee candidate target of racist death threats

A candidate for the Calgary public school board says she’s been the target of racist death threats that reference the killing of an anti-fascist demonstrator in Charlottesville, Virginia.

Nimra Amjad is running for trustee in Wards 3 and 4, and said she was shocked to receive the threats on Facebook from a man claiming to be part of the Neo-Nazi Aryan Guard.

One post threatened: “you will be lying dead on the street like Heather Heyer.”

Another called her a racial slur, asking her what right she had to run for office in Canada, stating: “we will find out where you live. The Aryan guard will find you,” and telling her to “beware.”

Police have not arrested a suspect yet, but Calgary police Hate Crimes Co-ordinator Craig Collins said his unit takes these situations very seriously.

He said the unit works closely with front line officer to collect evidence that could lead to additional hate crime charges and convictions.
