Bowfort Towers installation causing stir in Calgary

Calgary’s newest art project is getting a lot of negative reviews.

The Bowfort Towers, located along 16 Avenue in front of Canada Olympic Park, has a price tag of half a million dollars and some feel the money could be spent elsewhere.

The Canadian Taxpayers Federation is asking Calgary City Council to put an immediate halt to public art spending.

Colin Craig, interim Alberta Director for the CTF, said the City shouldn’t be spending so much money on art when people are struggling.

“I think it’s certainly inappropriate, especially when you consider, right now in Alberta food bank usage is at an all-time high and the city of Calgary leads the nation with the highest unemployment rate in Canada,” said Craig. ” To be spending half a million dollars on some rusty beams, on the west end of the city, it just doesn’t make any sense at all and it surprising that council wouldn’t have done something about this sooner,”.

He added what makes this project worse is the fact the artist, Del Geist, is from New York and the City didn’t pay a local artist to do the job.

Craig said he thinks city council should direct the money toward tax cuts and make life easier for those who are struggling financially.
