United Conservative Party not registered for Calgary Pride Parade

Will the newly formed United Conservative Party walk in the 2017 Calgary Pride Parade?

As of Wednesday afternoon, the answer was no.

Pride President, Jason Kingsley told 660NEWS the application process for a political party includes a one-page submission on how the party has supported the LGBTQ community, over the last year.

And the deadline is Friday.

“[We want to make sure] these political entries are not coming just to market themselves and, kind of, garner more votes, but when it comes time in legislation to actually support these bills and support the human rights of the gender and sexually diverse community, that they are actually walking the walk,” explained Kingsley.

Interim UCP leader, Nathan Cooper said Wednesday that his opinions on homosexuality have changed over the last decade and he is fully supportive of the LGBTQ community.

Kingsley noted Cooper’s recent sentiments were certainly welcome, but added the steps for any group to march are very clear.

“It’s too early to tell,” Kingsley said, “we’d be open to the dialogue and the discussion and seeing where that goes and we’d love an opportunity for them to demonstrate that allyship and that support in their policies and platforms, going forward.”

Parade day is September 3, 2017.
