Alberta’s two main conservative parties have voted to unite.
Progressive Conservative members voted 95 per cent in favour of a deal to merge with the Opposition Wildrose.
The Wildrose overwhelming approved the merger earlier in the day.
The result creates a new United Conservative Party.
PC Leader Jason Kenney and Wildrose Leader Brian Jean had criss-crossed the province in recent weeks to drum up support for a
merger.
There will now be a leadership race for the new party.
Both Kenney and Jean have said they will run and Calgary lawyer Doug Schweitzer has already been campaigning.
