Stamps host fundraiser for Calgary Food Bank

It should be a wild night at McMahon Stadium this Saturday, as the Saskatchewan Roughriders pay their first visit of the year, but regardless of who comes out on top, the Calgary Food Bank will be the ultimate winner.

It’s Purolator Tackle Hunger night at the ball park.

Murray Gibson, Purolator’s district manager, said the bar is being raised for donations.

“We always want to beat last year’s record,” he said.

“So far in Calgary, we’ve raised just under a million pounds, so we’re going to cross the million-pound mark this year. There’s no question about it. And the program nationally has raised 10.5 million pounds since 2003.”

The shipping company brings its Tackle Hunger event to all nine CFL cities throughout the season.

With the Rider tilt being one of the biggest draws of the year in Calgary, defensive end Charleston Hughes says it adds excitement to Saturday night’s contest.

“It’s going to be a lot of fans who really support Tackle for Hunger and it’s going to bring in pounds and pounds of food to give away, non-perishable items and cash donations: please bring.”

Hughes has been pounding the pavement making sure all fans get on board, or online, to make donations.

Before the game, Purolator volunteers will be collecting non-perishable food and cash donations at the stadium.

It’s a 7 p.m. kick-off Saturday against the Riders with tickets going fast.
