Stampede leftovers going to Calgarians in need

The Calgary Stampede may be over, but food from the midway and pancake breakfasts is still ending up on plates around the city.

The Leftovers Foundation teamed up with the Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth, to collect about 5,333 pounds of food to redistribute to social services agencies.

“It’s pretty exciting to pick up that food that would have otherwise been composted or thrown in the landfill,” said founder Lourdes Juan. “The vendors were really generous this Stampede, they were really supportive and on board our program and that really means the world to the service agencies that we work with.”

The largest collection was on the very last day when over than two hours were spent gathering 1,900 pounds of food.

“When the vendors are packing up, any food that they can’t reuse or repurpose, they have donated that to us. It was a big haul and it took about 12 volunteers that night to round up the food,” said Juan.

This was the organization’s biggest partnership yet, and Juan hopes to make it an annual collaboration.
