Owner of burned out car found in Calgary with three bodies has criminal past

Calgary police say the owner of a burned out vehicle found with three bodies inside Monday morning has a criminal past, as the Homicide Unit investigates.

Acting Insp. Paul Wozney wouldn’t go into detail about what kind of past it was.

“The vehicle was registered, it was not reported stolen and part of the investigation right now is us trying to track down the registered owner,” he said. “Whether they are in the vehicle or not, I can’t comment on that.”

Firefighters were called to the 100 block of Sage Bluff Circle N.W. around 7 a.m., eventually making the grisly discovery.

Wozney said it’s believed the fire was used to conceal evidence.

“There was what I would describe as significant damage to the vehicle,” he said. “That being said, some of the investigators that we have, whether it’s with the fire department or with the Calgary Police Service have significant training in arson investigation.”

Wozney said the bodies were those of a man, a woman and what is believed to be another woman, but it could be several days until they’re identified.

The vehicle was a black 2011 Chevrolet Cruze and police are searching for any CCTV footage, as well as tips from the public.

Police aren’t releasing more specific details about the bodies, including how they were placed in the vehicle.

The vehicle was found beside a townhome in an area where construction is going on.

A woman whose backyard faces the home spoke to 660 NEWS.

“To see a car right on the end there, kind of tucked in right by the fence, it is odd,” she said. “I work for a builder, so we see the red fence, you’re not supposed to be in there, that’s only for the construction workers.”

Carol Henke with the Calgary Fire Dept. said the firefighters who found the bodies had already checked in after their shift was over Monday morning.

“We will definitely be reaching out and ensuring their mental and emotional wellbeing,” she said. “No one when they’re fighting a fire wants to come across that anytime, but we understand it is part of our job.”
