Calgary Stampede Parade: what you need to know

Yahoo!

The 2017 Calgary Stampede Parade gets underway Friday morning in downtown Calgary.

The 4.8 kilometre route is reversed this year, to make it easier for spectators to make their way down to the grounds once the parade is over.

There is free admission to the Stampede grounds from 11 a.m. to 1:30 pm.

There are 113 entries this year, with 700 horses and 4,000 participants.

This year’s parade marshals are the seven chiefs of the Treaty 7 Nations: Chief Roy Fox of the Kainai/Blood Tribe, Chief Stanley C. Grier of Piikani Nation, Chief Joseph Weasel Child of the Siksika Nation, Chief Darcy Dixon of the Bearspaw First Nation, Chief Ernest Wesley of the Wesley First Nation, Chief Aaron Young of the Chiniki First Nation and Chief Lee Crowchild of the Tsuut’ina Nation.

It’s the third time Treaty 7 Chiefs have received the honour.

On-street entertainment for the parade will begin at 7:30 a.m., with the actual parade starting at 8:55 a.m.

Also starting at 7:30 a.m., several roads will be closed:

Westbound 6 Avenue from 6 Street S.E. to 10 Street S.W.

10 Street S.W. from 6 Avenue S.W. to 9 Avenue S.W.

Eastbound 9 Avenue from 10 Street S.W. to 8 Street S.E.

The morning connector from Bow Trail to westbound 5 Avenue S.W. will be open from 6 a.m. to 7 a.m. only.

There are additional road closures and parking restrictions in the East Village and around Fort Calgary (i.e., all roads between 4th Street SE and 6th Street SE and between 9th Avenue SE and Riverfront Avenue SE).

The roadways are expected to re-open by 2 p.m.

Parade-goers are being encouraged to walk, bike or hop on the LRT to get to the action.

Calgary Transit is operating 24 hours a day until Stampede wraps up early Monday, July 17.
