Mayor expecting Stampede excitement to build ahead of parade

Are you ready to Stampede?

There has been some grumbling about a lack of Calgary Stampede spirit heading into the annual 10 day western party.

Mayor Naheed Nenshi suggests that Canada’s 150th birthday celebration is partly to blame for the reduced hype.

“Well I gotta say, with the sesquicentennial Canada Day just on Saturday, I feel like it snuck up on me a little bit. But I’m in my boots now, and I’m looking at my schedule for this week, and there is tons of stuff happening throughout the whole city. The weather is going to be beautiful after last year’s rainout, so I’m really looking forward to it.”

That nice blast of summer is certainly going to be a highlight for the Mayor.

“Well I am particularly happy that Stampede this year falls after the end of Ramadan, so I can drink water again, because man it’s going to be a hot one this weekend, so everyone must stay hydrated, wear your hat, use your sunscreen.”

Nenshi is encouraging everyone to get out and whoop it up starting Friday with the parade downtown.
