Expect tight security at Stampede this year

Officials at the Calgary Stampede say security for this year’s show will be enhanced even further in response to recent global events.

One of the biggest changes will be the entire downtown parade route remaining closed until the last entry crosses the finish line at the east end of 6th Avenue while police monitor the perimeter.

Security will also be tight in Stampede Park, with cameras all over – some visible, some hidden – and the same can be said of Stampede security and city police.

Stampede spokesman Jim Larandeau says visitors will be subject to bag searches upon entry too, so he advises you pack your bag as you would a carry-on at the airport.

“The exception being of course we do encourage people to bring their water and snacks with them. But, you know, if you’ve got that pocket knife you’re used to carrying or the nail file, just leave it at home when you come to the Stampede and then it’s going to be really smooth coming in for you.”

Calgary police will again be operating what is essentially a ninth city police district for ten days, with a full staff of officers on the beat for the duration of Stampede.
