Battling brain tumour, Russian baritone cancels Austrian gigs

VIENNA – The Vienna State Opera says Russian baritone Dmitri Hvorostovsky has cancelled all performances for the coming season due to “severe illness.”

Hvorostovsky was diagnosed with a brain tumour in 2015. He has continued performing since them but has occasionally been forced to pull out of scheduled roles.

He was due to play leading roles in three Verdi operas in Vienna this year and next. An opera statement Thursday says replacements will be announced later.
