How to celebrate Canada 150 in Calgary

There are a lot of parties in store for Calgary as Canada celebrates its 150th birthday.

The city has dozens of events planned in the downtown.

July 1 festivities at Fort Calgary kick off at 9 a.m., and include a chance to dress like a Mountie, and the annual Living Flag, where participants are encouraged to dress in red and white.

The first 1,500 people will get a free t-shirt.

A time capsule from Canada’s 100th birthday in 1967 will be opened at Confederation Park at 11 a.m., and Calgarians can enjoy rides on horse-drawn wagons, as well as live entertainment.

Riverfront Avenue will be jam packed with entertainment beginning with the Chinatown Parade, followed by acts like the Calgary Multicultural Orchestra, Spark Productions Bollywood Dance, and homegrown musicians Tegan and Sara in the evening.

At 1:30 p.m. at Olympic Plaza, Canadian singer-songwriter Ian Tyson will be hosting a Strum ‘n Sing Along, followed by a Citizenship Reaffirmation Ceremony.

Visitors can also check out the RedBall Project, a street art piece that’s travelled to 30 cities worldwide.

In the East Village, there will be food trucks, a street fair, and live music.

On Prince’s Island Park, expect some Francophone entertainment and a colourful carnival.

Sharing the space will be the Indigenous Showcase and Powwow, teaching kids Metis steps and arts and crafts.

Near the Peace Bridge, Calgarians can tie on a red or white turban and learn about its importance in the Sikh community at Turban Eh!

The fun continues at Eau Claire Market with stage performers including the Expo Latino Dancers, St. Andrews Pipers and Metis Spirit Dancers.

There will also be a petting zoo, face-painting, an artisan market, and a beer garden for the adults.

The Genesis Centre in Calgary’s northeast will have its own Canada 150 bash with cultural performances, exhibits and food.

Calaway Park will be feeding your sweet tooth July 1 with its Canada Day celebrations: the first 100 guests will receive a birthday cupcake, and other giveaways will be happening all day long.

Heritage Park will take guests all the way back to 1867 with a free Dominion Day pancake breakfast for those who come before 10:30 a.m.

The country’s greatest athletic heroes will be honoured at Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame with interactive exhibits, crafts and special film screenings.

Calgarians can also delve into history with a tour of the Union Cemetery, learning about the interesting people buried there.

The day wraps up with a spectacular fireworks display from the Centre Street Bridge just after 11 p.m.
