Calgary Police: Sexual exploitation is a bigger problem than most realize

Calgary police are attempting to shed some light on the city’s sex trade, adding many people don’t really realize just how big of a problem it really is.

Det. Paul Rubner with the CPS Counter Exploitation Team told 660NEWS it is much more widespread than many people realize.

“At any point and time there is upwards of perhaps 400 youth being sexually exploited at any given time in Calgary,” Rubner said.

According to Rubner, teenaged girls are especially vulnerable and those who prey on them are well aware of that.

“Those that are intent on exploiting them or are taking advantage of them are excellent at identifying what’s missing in their lives and filling that gap very, very quickly, ” Rubner said.

Police are also working towards to help those who have been lured into the sex trade.

Already this year, Rubner said police have helped nearly a dozen at-risk sex trade workers escape their situation.
