Hundreds turn out for OneWalk to Conquer Cancer

By 660 NEWS Staff

A report this week said one in two Canadians will be diagnosed with cancer, and one in four will die.

Saturday’s second annual OneWalk to Conquer Cancer in Calgary is raising funds to try to cure the disease and to support those who need help.

“It’s a brand new event and a one day, 25 kilometre walk through the city,” said Phoebe Dey with the Alberta Cancer Foundation.

Last year, there were more than 400 walkers.

“[We] raised nearly one million for the event, so if we can get that again this year that would be great. We know that we’re still in a little bit of an economic downturn in Alberta but people are really generous and are stepping up to the cause,” said Dey.

Participants get to choose which cancer cause they want their money to go toward.

660’s own Cindy White is part of the Walk, which begins and ends at Shaw Millenium Park with a day-long celebration wrapping up at 7 p.m.
