Lockdown ends at Drumheller Institution

A lockdown is over at Drumheller Institution.

Correctional Service Canada lifted the lockdown that was in place since Saturday, after thoroughly searching the prison.

It says it’s strengthening measures to stop contraband from getting into prison walls to ensure a safe and secure environment for everyone.

This is the latest in a series of lockdowns at the institution, amid inmate overdoses.

In April, test results found a white powder that was seized contained the extremely strong opioid carfentanil, which is 100 times more potent than fentanyl.

At the time, a union rep for correctional officers said there have been as many as seven overdoses in one day.
