A huge funding boost for YMCA Calgary from Shane Homes.

The Y is the beneficiary of $3.5 million, and as a result, the new Rocky Ridge facility will be named after Shane Homes.

The VP of Marketing and Communications, Ken Lima-Coelho, said it’ll go a long way.

“No one will be turned away because of financial need. We know we have had a difficult run in our city a little bit, but this investment will help countless people. Families, individuals and kids of all stripes have access to services that they deserve to have,” said Lima-Coelho.

He added this will serve a very underserved area in the northwest.

“This facility is very large, over 280-thousand square feet. It will have pools, gyms, community spaces, a public library, a theatre and arts and culture spaces.”

Lima-Coelho says the City of Calgary has also been a great partner as well in making this facility a possibility.

“They recognized that the northwest of city didn’t have that much in the way of major recreation infrastructure. So a number of years ago, they secured money in order to make this happen, and guess what? Even as the downturn happened, they decided this was still worth investing in. They protected that money and now that facility is almost built.”

The new facility will open early next year.
