Motorcycle collisions more common in the spring

The Alberta Motor Association is urging people on the road to watch out for motorcycles this time of year.

Rick Lang with AMA’s driver education says motorcycle season is short in Alberta, and drivers aren’t used to seeing them when they get back on the road.

He said that motorists get used to not looking for motorcycles, especially in the spring time when there are a lot of motorcycle and vehicle collisions.

“The one thing that happens is people don’t look for them, they don’t see the motorcycle, and they’ll make a left turn in front of them, and that creates a huge problem for the motorcyclists,” Lang said.

Motorcyclists can also take some steps to ensure their safety.

“You have to realize that you’re not as easily seen as a larger vehicle,” Lang said. “So you have to drive in a predictable manner, so you give the motorist a chance to see you. Drive at a speed reasonable and prudent for conditions, including the speed limit, so you have time to react to anything that may happen with other road users.”

Lang added between 2010 and 2014 there were more than 3,300 injury-causing or fatal collisions in Alberta involving motorcycles.
