Enjoy the sun this summer, but don’t forget to protect yourself

The May long weekend marks the unofficial start of summer and many Canadians are planning on maximizing their time outdoors.

However a recent study on sun safety, conducted by Jamieson, shows that Canadians have concerning attitudes towards sun exposure.

Assistant Director of Policy at Canadian Cancer Society, Rob Nuttal, said 41 per cent of Canadians don’t pay attention to the daily UV index.

“Skin cancer is very common in Canada, but it’s also very preventable. The main cause of skin cancer is, in fact, UV radiation from the sun and tanning beds. As people are getting excited about the warm weather and the sunnier weather and the summer coming, we want to be reminding them to enjoy yourself, be outside and enjoy yourself, have fun, but enjoy the sun safely.”

Nuttal said the more you cover up in the sun the safer you will be.

That means lots of sun screen, big sunglasses, hats and anything else you can do to prevent unnecessary sun exposure.

The Canadian Cancer Society recommends Canadians reduce the time they spend in the sun when the sun’s rays are at their strongest, typically between 11 AM and 3 PM from April to September.
