Town of Cochrane introduces its own currency

Cochranites got their first look at a new local currency that aims to circulate and stimulate.

The Cochrane Dollar comes in singles, twos, fives, 10s and 20s and officials in the bedroom community west of Calgary hope it will have a positive impact on the economy.

“Well over a million people live a 30 to 40 minute drive from Cochrane,” Economic Development Officer Robert Kalinovich said during Friday’s launch event. “We’re hoping to encourage more of them to come and discover the great shops, restaurants and things we have here in Cochrane.”

You can buy the bills at the ATB Financial branch in Cochrane at a one for one exchange rate.

The Cochrane Dollar initiative is a partnership between Town of Cochrane Economic Development, ATB Financial (Cochrane branch) and the Cochrane Monetary Foundation.

Businesses accepting the currency include Townhall Public House, Cochrane Visitor Information Centre and MacKay’s Cochrane Ice Cream.
