Calgary Foothills WFC journey finally coming to fruition

After years of hard work off and on the pitch, Calgary Foothills WFC will soon make its United Women’s Soccer debut.

The squad will be playing at the highest league level of any women’s team in Canada.

“It’s been a lot of hard work,” head coach Troye Flannery explained. “It’s fun though because we’re that close.”

The group will kick off its inaugural season May 26 versus Real Salt Lake Women, followed by a date in Houston.

“I’m a little bit nervous,” Flannery admitted. “I’ll be bold. I want to win and I’m not getting any favours by starting on the road back-to-back and then we come home to play the champions, Santa Clarita. It’s a tough go, but we’re a good team. We’re technical, we’re athletic, we’ve been working hard on the training grounds. We’re a bit of the unknown, so I’ll put it back on the other teams — they know less about us as we know about them.”

The home opener is scheduled for June 10 against Santa Clarita Heat at the Calgary Soccer Centre.

The UWS is a second-division pro-am league in North America. It was formed in 2015. The hope of the league is to provide a pathway to division one soccer like the National Women’s Soccer League or the national program.
