Digital residential parking permits receive thumbs up from council

Residential electronic parking permits have been approved by city council and will be enforced starting this summer by the Calgary Parking Authority.

The program will start small, with five zones in August, and will be expanded into the other zones over a 14-month period.

The head of the CPA was questioned by council about privacy ahead of the vote on Tuesday night.

Mayor Naheed Nenshi says privacy is not much of a factor now considering you have to enter your license plate to park in a ParkPlus zone.

“I’m not particularly concerned about the privacy issues, because if someone wanted to spy on you, they could easily drive up and down the streets, and in fact, with those tags, it’s easier to tell who is a visitor or a resident because it’s right there,” said Nenshi.

Nenshi says there is a pretty good potential for the parking authority, once implemented, to sell the technology to other municipalities.

“The issue of printing paper application forms and sending out paper tags or making people come downtown to pick up those paper tags is an issue that hits a lot of municipalities. So I think a lot of communities that have adopted the ParkPlus system would be very interested in adopting this module.”
