Calgary council debates social media ban in meetings

To tweet or not to tweet — that’s one of the issues up for debate at city hall on Monday.

Councillor Andre Chabot has introduced a motion hoping to keep his colleagues off social media during council meetings.

Councillor Brian Pincott tells CityNews, he sees both sides but a councillor with their nose in their phone is disrespectful.

“From an etiquette perspective, it’s not great. But the way social media has evolved, and in particular, Twitter, because it is so real time, is that it is a way for people who aren’t in the room to participate in the conversation,” he said.

Pincott said Twitter can sometimes be very valuable, but he can understand how members of the public in council chambers may be put-off if councillors have their nose in their phone while someone is presenting.
