New neonatal care unit set to open at Peter Lougheed Centre

A new expanded neonatal intensive care unit is set to open at Peter Lougheed Hospital next month.

The new unit is triple the size of the previous NICU and will provide help for the most fragile of infants in southern Alberta.

Health Minister Sarah Hoffman said these new state of the art, larger rooms will allow for families to spend the night.

“It started — the construction phase — in May of 2015, so, almost two years to get from the beginning of that construction and the monetary investment going forward. We’ve had this in every budget that we’ve had as a government and this money couldn’t have been better invested,” she said.

One in eight births in Alberta require some level of neonatal hospital care.
