Woman shot while sleeping in Maskwacis

A woman was shot while she slept, when a home in the community of Maskwacis was peppered with gunfire.

RCMP say it happened around 5:51 Monday morning.

Two other women and a baby also in the home at the time were not hurt.

The 52-year-old woman who was wounded had to undergo surgery and was last listed in serious condition.

“It is a tragic situation when an innocent family is the victim of a violent offence,” said Inspector Earl Nini, Detachment Commander, Maskwacis RCMP. “We are diligently working on not only solving this investigation but working with the community on crime reduction initiatives.”

There have been a number of cases of shots being fired at homes in the First Nations community south of Edmonton. In 2011, the 5-year-old grandson of the Chief of the Samson Cree nation was killed.
