First bison calves born in Banff in nearly 150 years

For the first time in more than 140 years, a bison calf has been born in Banff National Park.

As part of an initiative to reintroduce wild bison to the Banff backcountry, the first calf was born in the Panther Valley on Saturday and since then, two more have been born to different moms.

“We woke up to about two or three feet of snow here in Banff, so these calves are definitely getting a good taste of the wide range of Banff weather,” explained resource conservation manager Bill Hunt. “But, bison are adapted for that. Our staff are keeping an eye on them and they’re doing very well.

In January, Parks Canada successfully relocated 16 wild plains bison from Elk Island National Park.

Hunt added they hope the seven other cows, will also give birth.
