Calgary Humane Society closed due to contagious virus; two dogs euthanized

The Calgary Humane Society has closed its doors until further notice.

Parvovirus is a potentially deadly, fast-spreading canine illness. It causes lethargy, loss of appetite and can be especially dangerous in young dogs, leading to lifelong cardiac problems.

Officials said two dogs were infected and had to be euthanized.

The facility is now performing a deep clean to make sure there are no chances of the virus spreading.

“We want to protect the rest of our animal population,” explained spokesperson Sage Pullen McIntosh. “We haven’t set a deadline or end date. Our health team is monitoring all of our animals for symptoms.”

If you have concerns or questions, you can call the society at 403-250-4455 or email them.
