“Somebody knows something” – CPS rules baby’s 2015 death a homicide

It’s been over a year and a half since the death of a three-month-old boy in Calgary and now police believe he was killed.

Cyrus Nel was found in medical distress in his Taradale home on August 31, 2015 and died the next day in hospital.

Calgary Police Service Insp. Don Coleman said after a long investigation involving pediatric specialists and pathologists, they have now ruled it a homicide and are turning to the public.

“Somebody knows something,” he said. “We encourage anybody who feels that they have a piece of information that could be important to like I said, what is now a homicide investigation that they come forward.”

The cause of death and what kind of injuries Cyrus suffered are not being released, but police do say the injuries occurred inside his family home.

“We believe that Cyrus resided in that residence with his parents,” he said, adding they’re not looking at additional suspects.

“The parents have participated in the investigation to date. However as I’ve stated earlier, there’s still, we believe, no plausible explanation that’s been offered as to the injuries that led to Cyrus’ death.”

The boy’s father works as a pastor in Calgary, but calls to his church have not been returned.

As for the length of the investigation, Coleman added undetermined child deaths are very sensitive and difficult investigations that rely on medical information that takes a long time.

“We get to a point where we know the cause of death, in this case, it’s been deemed a homicide and we’re confident in that there’s no other explanation,” he said. “Generally speaking with those investigations, there’s exclusive opportunity, often amongst the parents and we believe in this case, this would be similar to that.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact police or Crime Stoppers.
