Calgary Flames clear out lockers

See you in September.

The Calgary Flames players and staff said their final goodbyes Friday and left the Saddledome with regret for their early Stanley Cup playoff exit, while they looked toward the future with optimism.

“We’ll regroup and use the summer as a time to get better,” captain Mark Giordano said. “Next year, you hope some of this feeling carries over.”

The blueliner added the reality of going down to the Anaheim Ducks in a sweep is still a tough pill to swallow.

“It stings,” he said. “I feel like we were a lot closer. The 4-0 series doesn’t make it look that way, but we played some good hockey down the stretch. I thought in the playoffs we played some really good hockey and we didn’t get any results.”

Giordano may suit up for Canada at the upcoming World Hockey Championships in Paris, France. He told the media he would mull over the decision the next few days. The Canadian brass also reached out to Sean Monahan, but he declined due to upcoming surgery on his wrist.

Sniper Johnny Gaudreau will join the Americans, while Michael Frolik is dealing with a wrist injury that’s been impeding him since December and he won’t play for the Czech Republic. Mikael Backlund declined an invitation from Sweden because of minor back problems.
