Questions swirl around Flames offseason

It’s going to be a long offseason for Flames fans and there are already a lot of questions about what the team will look like next year.

After a strong season which saw the team finish with 94 points and a wildcard playoff berth, the Flames were eliminated in the first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs in four straight games by the Anaheim Ducks.

Sportsnet 960 The Fan morning show host Dean ‘Boomer’ Molberg says there are a lot of decisions that need to be made, but it’s not clear who will be making them.

“(General Manager) Brad Treliving doesn’t have a contract for next year as it stands today to my understanding, so that sort of discussion now begins which is not as fun as talking about playoff games,” he said.

One of the biggest questions is who will play goal for the Flames next year. Boomer says it’s unlikely Brian Elliot or Chad Johnson will be back.

“I know [hockey analyst] Elliot Friedman said in the broadcast last night he hopes that Calgary takes a deep breath before they make some big changes or big decisions and I hope that’s the case,” he explained.

The core of the team is locked up so if the team can make the necessary tweaks, there’s no reason to believe they won’t be back in the playoffs next year.
