No celebrations in Flames town as Ducks eliminate Calgary in 4

There was no joy along Calgary’s Red Mile Wednesday night as the Calgary Flames fell to the Anaheim Ducks 3-1 in Game 4.

Fans flocked to their favourite watering holes along 17 Avenue S.W. to cheer on the hometown team but to no avail.

They were glued to TV screens and prayed the Flames might be able to overcome a 2-0 then 2-1 deficit from the Ducks, right up until the dying seconds of the game.

Popular bars like Trolley 5 and National had to turn people away at the doors after reaching capacity early on in the game.

By the time it was all over, you could read the disappointment on many die-hard faces like Mark’s.

“Not very happy,” he told 660 NEWS. “Calgary outplayed Anaheim the entire time, we got too many bad calls against us, we should have won at least half of those games. This series should have gone to seven games.”

“It’s a heartbreak tonight, it’s a heartbreak the whole series, close games and we just couldn’t get it done,” his friend said.

“Anaheim just had our number, give credit to Anaheim but we just couldn’t figure out a way to get er in,” said Upesh.

“I still love the Flames and I love Calgary cause I’m from Calgary …. even if they did lose, they’re still my team,” said David.

Most fans in fact at Trolley 5 say they’re going to have a tough time cheering for the only Alberta team left in the tournament.

“I’m in for the Habs man, Canadiens bro,” said Chandler. “Edmonton’s gonna lose man, any other Canadian team but the Oilers.”

“Penguins my second favourite team, I grew up a Lemieux fan so they’re going to win it this year again. Screw them man (the Oilers), I hate the Ducks more than the Oilers but no good for Edmonton,” said Darren.

“The Leafs, if the Leafs make (it through) the playoffs I’m jumping in the lake,” laughed Tristan.

Anaheim now moves onto Round 2.

Edmonton plays next in Game 5 against the San Jose Sharks Thursday night at 8:30pm.
