Calgary Flames try to avoid first-round sweep

The Calgary Flames face being swept out of the Stanley Cup Playoffs Wednesday night if they can’t pull out a win over Anaheim.

Even with their backs against the wall, the Flames remain optimistic.

“We’ve done a lot of good things over the course of this season,” forward Troy Brouwer said. “We pulled ourselves out of some really tough holes. We’ve got a lot of character in this room.”

Brian Elliott will be between the pipes again for Calgary. However, head coach Glen Gulutzan has elected to take out Lance Bouma and Matt Stajan for Curtis Lazar and Freddie Hamilton, who will make their post-season debuts.

“It’s an energy thing,” Gulutzan explained. “We’re down three and there’s two players that have played pretty well in the games they’ve come in. They provided good energy, speed.”

The Ducks head into the Saddledome with a 3-0 series lead in the best-of-seven series.
