Travel Feature: Leonard Cohen and giant marionettes in Montreal

As Canada celebrates its 150th birthday this year, one of the country’s most vibrant cities is marking a much longer existence.

Originally known as Ville Marie, travel writer Jody Robbins says Montreal is marking its 375th anniversary.

“In 1642 they founded the small colony with 50 explorers from France, and now you’ve got a bustling city of 1.7 million.”

The author of ’25 Places in Canada Every Family Should Visit’ says a whole year of events is unfolding, but the May long weekend will feature a highlight.

“There are these giant marionettes that are going to take over the streets,” said Robbins.

“By giant I mean 3 stories high, and it’s produced by a French street theatre group. They’re going to parade around Montreal all over the long weekend. They had it in Australia, they did it in London and it’s really special that in Canada it’s coming to Montreal.”

Robbins says, you might also want to check out the Leonard Cohen exhibit at the Museum of Contemporary Art, later in the year.

“It takes place in November. It will run until next spring. It features a collection of works by artists of all genres; music, film, performance, who are inspired by Leonard Cohen’s works.”
