Veteran Calgary police officer charged with assault

Calgary police have charged a 13-year member of the force with assault after an off duty incident more than two years ago.

Police say on Thursday, Jan. 29, 2015, the man was at his northwest home, when he noticed someone walking between his residence and a neighbour’s.

The off duty officer got into his vehicle and drove up to the man, and asked why he was in his neighbour’s yard, but the man kept walking and did not answer.

Police say the officer continued following the man, who allegedly kicked his vehicle.

Police say the officer then lightly struck the man with his vehicle from behind, then got out and a fight began.

Both suffered injuries in the altercation.

A witness eventually broke it up, and the officer identified himself as being with the CPS.

41 year old Douglas Sherwood, is charged with one count each of assault with a weapon, assault causing bodily harm, and uttering threats.
