Mystery remains as bear cubs found in Banff outhouse wait for a home

Parks Canada is looking outside Alberta for a new home for three bear cubs found in a Banff outhouse on April 1st.

Sheila Luey, Acting Superintendent for Parks Canada in Banff, says staff continues to look after the animals.

“We’ve taken them into our care while we look for either a reputable rehab facility or a certified zoo,” Luey said. “Our preference of course is the former.”

Luey says a facility in Alberta is likely not an option because of rules in this province regarding the rehabilitation of bears.

The mystery remains as to how the bears ended up in the washroom, because Luey says an extensive search of the area didn’t locate any signs of their mother.

“In fact, we found no sign of bear activity at all in the area.”

Luey is once again asking anyone with information about the bears to contact the park dispatch at 403-762-1470.
