The Alberta government is committing another $13 million towards flood mitigation projects in Calgary.
The funding will help pay for small-scale projects to protect the city from flooding.
Mayor Naheed Nenshi says these projects will provide some peace of mind for those most at risk.
“Spring is a time of keeping an eye on the water levels thinking about what is going to happen as we move into a flood season,” Nenshi said. “And the work that we’re announcing today as well as the upstream work are another step towards a more resilient and safer city.”
Today’s announcement does not include funding towards the proposed Springbank dry dam. It’s estimated the reservoir would cost about $263-million and would be capable of diverting more than 70 million cubic metres of water from the Elbow River during high-flow periods to a reservoir.
The funding announcement includes:
- $3.4 million for construction of a dedicated pump station to protect the community of Sunnyside from both high levels of stormwater and river water.
- $6.4 million for upgrades of an existing pump station in Sunnyside and related flood resilience work.
- $1.7 million for replacement of a sanitary sewer lift station in the community of Roxboro.
- $738,000 in supplemental funding for a flood barrier in west Eau Claire.
- $567,000 for improvements of emergency access at Harvie Passage and downstream sluice gates.
