Flames CEO Ken King clarifies comments on moving team

Calgary Flames President and CEO Ken King may have inadvertently put a damper on the flames playoff clinching weekend.

The trouble started when he appeared on Sportsnet 590 The Fan in Toronto last week and said there would be no threat to move, the team would just move if it didn’t get a new arena.

King has since walked those comments back both online and in an interview with CityNews.

At Sunday night’s game, King said he never should have taken the bait and answered that hypothetical question.

“All of our emphasis, all of this narrative should be on being successful – not on the notion of failure – that’s a dumb thing to introduce, and you know what, that’s on me,” he said.

He said all efforts are on trying to work out a successful agreement on a new arena with the city.

“We’re in the process of negotiating, at their request — negotiating is an interesting word — having a discussion about a Victoria Park option that they introduced,” he said.

“We had a meeting as recently as Friday, we’re having a meeting as recent as next Tuesday. Those meetings are ongoing and we’ll see where they get to.”

King holds firm on one point: if there is no solution in Calgary, a logical option could include deciding to move the team.
