Weekend downtown road closure

Construction on a downtown pedestrian bridge could cause headaches for travellers, starting Friday, in Calgary.

The next stage of the plus-15 project joining the Watermark Tower to the new Manulife building on 5 Street SW will close a portion of the core through the first weekend of April.

Beginning at 8:00 p.m., Friday, 5 Street SW will be closed between 7 Avenue SW and 8 Avenue SW to all vehicle, pedestrian and bicycle traffic.

The route is expected to reopen at 6:00 p.m., Sunday.

Alternate routes in the downtown core include 7 Street SW or 3 Street SW for motorists and cyclists travelling south. Pedestrians can find sidewalks on immediately adjacent routes.

Motorists in the southwest quadrant of the city can also expect delays at the major intersection of Glenmore Trail SW and Sarcee Trail SW. Water main repair work will keep lanes restricted to one, in both directions, until at least Sunday. Watch out for reduced speed limits, too.
