Travel Feature: Don’t give Winnipeg the cold shoulder

This city is often under the radar for vacation destinations, but you could be missing out.

In our feature celebrating Canada’s 150th anniversary, travel writer Jody Robbins says Winnipeg is well worth a look.

The author of 25 Places in Canada Every Family Should Visit, says get outdoors and experience some of the popular go-to spots, like The Forks.

“This is an historic site, green space, cultural hub. It’s where the merging of the Assiniboine and Red Rivers meet and it’s just a very special meeting place. There’s a farmers’ market there, wonder playground, indoor playground. You definitely want to hit The Forks.”

If museums are more your speed, but you’re looking for something different, Winnipeg is home to the first solely dedicated to human rights.

“The design itself of the building is very compelling, because every architectural component of the museum is a physical expression of human rights,” said Robbins.

Winnipeg even offers the latest in spa experiences at Thermëa.

Then, there’s the innovative restaurants, like Deer and Almond.

“They put up a pop-up restaurant every winter, right on the frozen expansion of the river, called RAW Almond.

“So you want to check that out. Enoteca is this amazing bistro, but in a strip mall. It’s in a former Quiznos and I loved it; truly fabulous.”
