Calgary fundraising group the epitome of ‘strength in numbers’

It’s a major milestone for a Calgary organization, and one the founder of the chapter says she’s surprised they reached so quickly.
100 Women Who Care Calgary has hit the $250-thousand mark of giving — to more than a dozen charities.
Alison Lapczuk founded the local group back in November of 2013 and is amazed at the progress.
“Honestly, very surprised to have gotten this far, this fast. I know I remember our first interview (with 660 NEWS) back when we first started this. I was telling you about raising eight thousand dollars for that first charity and we’ve come such a long way since then. It’s just unbelievable,” said Lapczuk.
Originally aiming for a hundred women to give a hundred dollars each time, they’ve already doubled it and are now handing out about $20-thousand dollars with each meeting.
The group meets four times a year and the members vote on which charities should recieve funding.
They’ve also inspired chapters of two other organizations – 100 Men Who Give a Damn Calgary and 100 Kids Who Care Calgary.
According to Lapczuk, 100 Women was the first of its kind in western Canada and was only about the fifth group in the country at the time.
Today, there are well over 150.
